In Islam, faith is not only belief and ritual — it is meant to show in how a person behaves. Good character (akhlaq) is treated as a core part of religion, inseparable from worship.8910 The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was himself described as the model of character (see Who is Muhammad ﷺ?):
"And indeed, you are of a great moral character."
— Quran 68:4 (Saheeh International)1
Justice and good conduct
The Quran sets out a broad ethic of justice, kindness, and restraint from wrongdoing:
"Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression."
— Quran 16:90 (Saheeh International)2
Forgiveness and controlling anger
Among the qualities the Quran praises most are generosity, self-control, and the willingness to forgive:
"[The righteous are those] who restrain anger and who pardon the people — and Allah loves the doers of good."
— Quran 3:134 (Saheeh International)3
Kindness to parents
Right after the command to worship God alone, the Quran places kind treatment of one's parents:
"And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and to parents, good treatment. … And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy."
— Quran 17:23-24 (Saheeh International)4
Character at the heart of faith
The Prophet ﷺ tied the strength of a person's faith directly to their character, and taught that nothing weighs more heavily in God's judgment:
"The most complete of the believers in faith are those with the best character."
— Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1162 (Hasan)5
"Nothing is heavier on the believer's scale on the Day of Judgment than good character."
— Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2002 (Sahih)6
This care extends to how we treat everyone around us:
"None of you [truly] believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself."
— Sahih al-Bukhari 137
In short
Islam treats good character as a measure of faith itself. Justice, honesty, mercy, patience, forgiveness, and kindness — especially to parents and neighbors — are not optional extras but central to what it means to live as a Muslim.
