Al-Asr, "The Declining Day" (or "Time"), is the 103rd surah — only three verses, revealed in Mecca, yet often cited as one of the most complete summaries of guidance in the Quran.1
What it is about
The surah swears an oath "by time," then delivers a sweeping verdict: "Indeed, mankind is in loss." Everyone is running down the clock of a finite life. It then carves out the sole exception — "except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience." Four things save a person: faith, action, and a community that holds one another to truth and to endurance.
Why it matters
